PentestLoop employs an evolutionary red-teaming approach inspired by genetic algorithms. A population of adversarial attack strategies is initialized from a curated seed library, then iteratively improved through selection, mutation, and crossover operations.

Each generation, every attack strategy engages the target agent in a multi-turn conversation. A judge model evaluates each conversation across security, quality, and compliance dimensions, assigning a fitness score (0–1). The fittest strategies are selected, mutated, and crossed over to produce the next generation. This process continues until convergence or the maximum generation limit is reached.
